The Early Modern Era and its thinkers
In the Research Master Early Modern Intellectual History at Erasmus University Rotterdam you will immerse yourself in the political thoughts and philosophies of one of the most thriving periods of history, the Early Modern Era (1400-1800). In this period a few of the greatest thinkers of history developed their opinions on the public and private domain; laying the first foundations for the modern (nation-) states as we know them now. In the Research Master you learn about politics, the reception of early modern Roman law and the importance of sixteenth and seventeenth century philosophy.
Erasmus Center for Early Modern Studies
As a student of the Research Master Early Modern Intellectual History you will have the privilege to learn and do research at the internationally recognized research institute Erasmus Center for Early Modern Studies. The center is a cooperative research endeavour of the three faculties of Law, Philosophy and History, Culture and Communication with the Rotterdam Library. The renowned institute amasses expertise on the early modern era. In addition, you will have the unique opportunity to visit and conduct research at the academic partners of the Erasmus Center for Early Modern Studies in England (Oxford and York) and Italy (Verona and Trent).

You will gain advanced research experience by attending research presentations, following intensive methodology workshops and conducting your own research based on methods from the Erasmus Center for Early Modern Studies. Source materials written in English and Latin are a main part of the relevant study material.
