Frederik Dhaenens joined the Department of Media & Communication in the autumn of 2011. He teaches Television in Society in the Master Media &Journalism and the research workshop Television in Social Life in the Master Media, Culture & Society.
At the moment, he is finishing his PhD on the role of gay representation in television fiction (entitled Gays on the Small Screen: A Queer Theoretical Study into Articulations of Queer Resistance in Contemporary Television Fiction) at Ghent University (Belgium). As a researcher, he is interested in popular culture, film, television, popular music and how these areas intersect with the politics of representation. In particular, he is interested in issues of gender and sexuality. He has published in international and peer-reviewed journals such as Television & New Media, Sexualities, European Journal of Cultural Studies, and the Journal of Communication Inquiry.
