Biographical Note

Emy Koopman (1985, Groningen) is a PhD student in the Department of Media & Communication. Under supervision of Prof. Dr. Susanne Janssen (EUR), Dr. Els Andringa (UU) and Dr. Frank Hakemulder (UU), she is working on her NWO-funded project Reading Suffering. An Empirical Inquiry into Affective and Reflective Responses to Narratives about Mental Pain.  

Before coming to Erasmus University, Emy studied at Utrecht University. She holds a Research Master’s degree in Literary Studies (2010, cum laude) and a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology (2011). From March 2011 until November, she did an internship as a psychologist at mental health institution PsyQ. Her ambition has always been to combine the fields of psychology and literature, which led to the current research project. This project started in December 2011 and is scheduled to finish in December 2015.

Generally, Emy is specialized in narratives about trauma and suffering. She has presented several papers on this topic at international conferences and has published about it in, a.o., the Journal of Literary Theory and Scientific Study of Literature

Apart from her academic activities, Emy has been doing voluntary and freelance work in the field of journalism. She worked as an editor for Vooys, tijdschrift voor letteren and for 8weekly, and she has written essays for several media, a.o. De Groene AmsterdammerDW B, and De Correspondent. Currently, she is a contributing editor at hard/hoofd.
