Stijn Reijnders

Associate Professor in Cultural Heritage

Biographical Note

My name is Stijn Reijnders. I'm Associate Professor in Cultural Heritage at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. In 2006, I finished my PhD, entitled Holland op de Helling. Televisieamusement, volkscultuur en ritueel vermaak. This research consisted of a comparison between television entertainment and historical examples of popular culture. The investigation centred not only on television entertainment as a modern incarnation of an older tradition of entertainment, but also on how popular TV programmes become assimilated into contemporary group and party cultures.

Currently, I am working on a new project entitled Media Tourism. Geographical Imagination in the World of James Bond and The Da Vinci Code, funded by the Dutch Science Foundation (NWO). This new research project focuses on media tourism: the phenomenon of people visiting locations from popular novels, films or TV series. The research is based on three prominent case studies: James Bond, Dracula, and TV detective tours.

In May 2011, two books were published based on the results of this project: Places of the Imagination. Media, Tourism, Culture (published by Ashgate), and Plaatsen van verbeelding. Media, toerisme, fancultuur (published by Uitgeverij Veerhuis). Places of the Imagination has received positive reviews in, among others, Tourism Geographies, Tourism Recreation Research and Managing Leisure. Check out some reviews of the Dutch book in the newspapers NRC Handelsblad, Trouw (page 2), de Volkskrant (page 2), Parool and Algemeen Dagblad.
