Education

  • 1963-1970: Christelijk Lyceum Delft, Gymnasium B (secondary school)

 

  • 1970-1971: American Field Service (exchange program): Billings, Montana (United States)

 

  • 1971-1972: study of geology at the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam

 

  • 1972-1975: kandidaats (or BA) degree in History, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam

 

  • 1975-1980: doctoraal (or MA) degree in Modern History, Universiteit van Amsterdam (Master thesis about the German youth movement, 1913-1922).

 

  • 1988: dissertation Techniek en ideologie, Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam, supervised by professor Henk van Dijk

Carreer

  • 1980ff. Universitair Docent (lecturer) in the cultural history of modern societies, Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam, Faculteit der Historische en Kunstwetenschappen.

 

  • 1988-1994: co-editor of the six-volume Geschiedenis van de techniek in de negentiende eeuw (Zutphen 1988-1994)

 

  • 1989-1994: co-editor of the journal on the history of science and technology Tractrix

 

  • 1993-1994: visiting lecturer at the Faculty of History at the University of Bielefeld

 

  • 1999-2003: Postdoc fellow at the Stichting Historie der Techniek, Technische Universiteit Eindhoven. Project: patterns of technical and social development in the Netherlands in the twentieth century (part of the production of the seven-volume Techniek in Nederland in de twintigste eeuw).

 

  • 2002-2009. Chair of the technology network of the European Social Science History Conference, together with prof. Thomas Misa of the Charles Babbage Institute at the University of Minnesota.
