Binding Study Advice (BSA)

What is the Binding Study Advice?
The Binding Study Advice is applicable to all BA-1 students who have started a Bachelor’s programme since 1st September 2005. All students who have not obtained 60 EC of BA-1 within one year are covered by the rules of the Binding Study Advice.
As a student you are expected to have acquired all 60 EC of BA-1 by the end of your first academic year (including re-sit results). If you do not meet this standard and there are no personal circumstances at issue such as illness or a disability, you will be issued with a negative Binding Study Advice. As a result of that advice, you will not be allowed to register for the study programme in question for the following three years.
Who does the Binding Study Advice apply to?
A Binding Study Advice is issued to all students who have not yet completed their BA-1. Students who have been granted exemptions in the Bachelor programme will also receive a Binding Study Advice. The EC for the exempted subjects in BA-1 are included in the calculation of the total number of credits earned. Students who are following more than one programme at the Erasmus University will receive a Binding Study Advice per programme. Pre-master students (a one-year programme giving access to a Master’s programme) do not receive a Binding Study Advice.
Had a bad start and do you think matters will not improve soon?
If you stop your study programme in the first year and cancel your registration by the 1st of February, you will not be issued with a Binding Study Advice. If you re-register in a subsequent academic year you will, however, receive a Binding Study Advice at that time. Prior to doing so, please consult your student advisor in order to find out what is best for you.
How does the procedure for the Binding Study Advice work?
After the examinations in term 1, 2 and 3 you will receive a written report from the Examation Board which contains an overview of the results you have obtained thus far, as well as an advice regarding the continuation of your studies. If your results up until that point in time are not satisfactory, you will receive a warning and are urgently requested to make an appointment with your student advisor to discuss your situation. Sometimes the student advisor and student may come to the conclusion that study programme is not the best programme for the student and that the best course of action is to stop as soon as possible.
The definitive Binding Study Advice
Your total number of EC from Bachelor-1 will be calculated in August after the re-sit examinations to determine whether you have met the following standard: 60 EC by the end of the first year.
Depending on the number of EC that you have obtained, you will receive one of the following as Binding Study Advice at the end of August:
- 60 EC: if you have obtained all 60 EC from the first year, you have completed BA-1 and you will be issued with positive Binding Study Advice. Afterwards, you will no longer be subject to the Binding Study Advice.
- 0-55 EC: you will be given a negative Binding Study Advice if you have earned fewer than 60 EC by the end of your first year. As a result of this advice, you will not be allowed to register for the study programme in question for the following three years.
Lodging an appeal
If you have received a negative Binding Study Advice and you do not agree with that advice, it is possible to lodge an appeal with the Examination Appeals Board (College van Beroep voor de Examens (CBE)). The Binding Study Advice is based on study results. As prescribed by law, the university is required to take personal circumstances into account if these circumstances are the cause of the disappointing progress in your studies. These personal circumstances can be:
- physical, sensory or other functional disability (handicap);
- professional sports players;
- exceptional family circumstances;
- board membership and membership of a university participation body (medezeggenschapsorgaan).
Please be aware that it is very important to contact the student advisor in case of personal circumstances within four weeks of the commencement of the circumstances and before July 1st. If a student comes forward after the 1st of July, he or she must be aware that in most cases these personal circumstances will not be taken into consideration for your BSA. Furthermore, all notified personal circumstances should be corroborated in the form of e.g. a doctor's statement, a mourning card or a letter with a contact number from close relatives.
Your student advisor will discuss your options and study planning with you in order to minimise any delay in your studies and to maximise your chances of obtaining the required EC. An individual study plan can be drawn up for you if your student advisor considers this to be necessary. At the end of the year, the student advisor will advise the Examination Board regarding the definitive Binding Study Advice that it should issue. The Examination Board can only take your personal circumstances into account if you inform your student advisor in good time and keep in regular contact with the student advisor.
