Laurie Slegtenhorst MA

PhD Candidate

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Laurie Slegtenhorst (1987) is a PhD candidate at the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication. Since September 1, 2013, she works on a research project about popular culture and the Second World War in the Netherlands in international perspective. The project focuses on how popular culture in the Netherlands (Dutch and foreign novels, movies, re-enactments, social media, comics, games and websites) and the memory of the Second World War relate to each other. An important element in this research is the heritage sector: In which way did popular culture influence this sector? Although the main focus is on the Netherlands after 1990, the development of WW II representations in international popular culture since 1945 will be analysed as well.

This research project (2013-2018) is a cooperation between the Center for Historical Culture at Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication, and the NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies (KNAW). The former Netherlands Institute for Heritage (Erfgoed Nederland) has financed this research.
