Biographical Note

Abby Waysdorf is a lecturer in the Media and Communication department at Erasmus University, Rotterdam. She has recently finished her PhD dissertation entitled "Placing Fandom: Film Tourism in Contemporary Fan Culture,” which was part of the NWO-funded project “Locating Imagination: An Interdisciplinary Perspective on Literary, Film and Music Tourism.” Her research analyzed the experience of film tourism from the tourist’s perspective, focusing on the relationship between fandom, film-related locations, and tourism practice. She will be teaching in the IBCoM program for first-year and premaster students on Academic Skills, Media and Communication Theory, Media Industries and Audiences, and Key Concepts in the Social Sciences.

Abby was born in Washington, DC and grew up in Denver, Colorado. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Comparative History of Ideas from the University of Washington, Seattle, and a Master’s Degree (cum laude) in Media and Performance Studies from Utrecht University. Her MA thesis focused on football (soccer) fanfiction and the changing nature of football’s relationship to the media and media culture(s).

Her research interests include fan studies, sports and media, and the relationship between media and place.
